The great nation of Israel was thriving. The beloved Judean king David had ruled a united kingdom of twelve strong tribes. David’s son, Solomon inherited a stable nation with the best possible religious and political legacy. But there was a problem: the people were offering their sacrifices at the high places, unholy locations of Canaanite worship. The Canaanite gods like Asherah, the goddess of fertility and Baal, the god of the storm promised prosperity if they were obeyed. The Kingdom of Israel, once devoted to God, was plagued with idolatry. It seemed they wanted to trust in the LORD but were drawn to what the false gods had to offer.
The kingdom of our hearts is plagued with the same problem. We want to follow God, but part of our heart is drawn away, enticed. What is the true state of the heart? Is it pure or wicked? The bible seems to contradict itself about the heart. Many believers know very little about what the bible says about the heart. Jeremiah 17:9 is many Christians’ favorite verse about the heart. It can be found in the Old Testament and says the heart is deceitful… wicked.
The word “HEART” is used 925 times in the bible, almost twice as many times as the word “law;” more
than the words: “Christ,” “glory,” “peace,” “wisdom,” “love,” or “evil.” The LORD has a good deal to say about the heart. One recurring theme in the bible is about the natural state of the heart being divided. The LORD consistently asks his people to follow him WHOLE-HEARTEDLY.
How can we follow God wholeheartedly? Does accepting Christ transform our hearts or are our hearts still wicked? What is the fate of our divided hearts?
We will explore all these questions and more as we follow the Jewish kings of the divided kingdom.
